Centenarian doctor still practicing in US
Florida pediatrician Andy Margileth recently turned 101 and is one of a dozen physicians over 100 still licensed to practice in the US. The World War II Navy veteran had a military pediatrics award named for him and was involved in efforts to develop vaccines and prevent childhood disease.

Economics-based financial planning can help boomers
An economics-based approach to financial planning can help baby boomers who may not be as prepared financially as they should be for retirement, according to economics professor Laurence Kotlikoff. The approach has four goals and can help a household maintain and even increase its standard of living throughout retirement, Kotlikoff writes.

Feds recovered $3.1B via health care fraud, abuse program
HHS and the Department of Justice's joint Health Care Fraud and Abuse Control Program recovered nearly $3.1 billion in fiscal 2020, including about $2.1 billion for the Medicare Trust Funds, according to a report.

People with Parkinson's, dementia benefit from dance
Beth Elgort, a retired social worker, started dance classes and the nonprofit Mind, Music, Movement Foundation to help people with movement issues or neurological disorders, such as Parkinson's or Alzheimer's diseases, maintain their physical and mental abilities and socialize. Elgort has worked with a neurologist and ballet dancers for a class that helps people with such disorders maintain quality of life.

Music improves quality of life for older adults
Alzheimer's disease and dementia expert Dan Cohen started the Music & Memory program in 2010 to help older-adult care organizations and communities use music to improve quality of life among patients and residents. Music helps them remember, relax, and maintain a sense of self even when they're experiencing mental confusion, Cohen says.

Teledentistry has benefits for Mont. veterans
Dental care for veterans at the Montana Department of Veterans Affairs has become more convenient lately thanks to its implementation of teledentistry and specifically, the use of an intraoral camera that helps dental hygienists spot oral health issues. The hygienists then send information to the dentist or relevant specialist and begin the process of treatment without the patient having to undergo multiple visits.

Calif. budget removes asset test for dual eligibles
The newly approved California budget eliminates the financial asset test for people who have both Medi-Cal, the state's Medicaid program, and Medicare. Financial eligibility for this population will be based only on income.

MSDE Child Care Stabilization Grant
​

The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) announced that licensed child care centers and registered family child care providers in Maryland can apply for Child Care Stabilization Grants. The more than $309 million American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act of 2021 child care stabilization initiative provides grants to licensed providers that sustain the child care sector and build a stronger child care system. 

Child care providers licensed by the Maryland State Department of Education no later than March 11, 2021 (as required by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021) are eligible to receive an American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act of 2021 Child Care Stabilization Grant if they are:
  • Open and available to provide child care services on the date the application is submitted, or
  • Temporarily closed on the date the application is submitted due to public health, financial hardship, or other reasons relating to the COVID-19 public health emergency, but commit to re-open to provide child care services no later than September 7, 2021.
Grant Period: August 6, 2021-March 6, 2022
Grant Awards Amounts: $15,000 base award and $300 per licensed slot
Grant Application Submission Deadline: August 6, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. EST

  • Arts Forward Fund: helping arts organizations stabilize, adapt, and recover from COVID-19
  • Donors Investing in the Arts (DIVAs): promoting children’s mental health and well-being through the arts
  • Food for Montgomery: helping partners pivot, collaborate, or innovate food security work
  • Fund for Children, Youth, and Families: supporting housing services, foster care programs, and academic and career success
  • Sharing Montgomery: ensuring an equitable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic

Deadline Extended: MoCo Economic Development Grant for Nonprofits

The MoCo Economic Development Grant Program for Nonprofits will provide competitively selected grants ranging from $10,000 to $20,000. The grant is for Montgomery County nonprofits with initiatives that align with one (or more) of the four identified priorities: (1) Minority Entrepreneurship, (2) STEM Education, (3) Research and Innovation Development, and (4) Small-Scale Manufacturing.

The application deadline has been extended. The new due date is July 23, 5pm and award notifications begin August 16. Click here for more info and to apply.
